You may come across the terms "high density" and "low density" in your search. If your system is designed to accept DDR (or Double Data Rate) RAM of 184 pin DIMM (which most desktops are), then you will need "low density" RAM. If you purchase high density RAM, then your system will only be able to utilize half the RAM's vaule.
Low Density RAM is 100% compatible with all systems and all chipsets.
High Density RAM only has 10% compatibility and is extremely slow.
