If your system is designed to accept DDR (or Double Data Rate) RAM of 184 pin DIMM (which most desktops are), then you will need "low density" RAM. If you purchase high density RAM, then your system will only be able to utilize half the RAM's vaule.

Low Density RAM is 100% compatible with all systems and all chipsets.
High Density RAM only has 10% compatibility and is extremely slow.

Generally speaking, the more RAM you have, the better off you are and the faster your computer will run. But it really depends on what you're using the computer for.

If you're just checking your email and maybe doing some word processing, 1GB should be plenty. If you're into more serious gaming like Age of Conan and Bioshock, you'll need 2GB, 3GB if your computer can handle it.

Turn off all power going to the computer, detach all cables, and pop open the case. Inside you'll find the RAM. It's easily recognizable, but if you have trouble finding it, refer to some of the pictures below.

After you find the RAM, find the sticker on it that will tell you the size, the frequency, the make and model, etc. and write it all down. E.g. Kingston 128 MB 133mhz DDR RAM. Just search for those same specifications except in a larger size, i.e. 1GB.
